re: my experiences with barber (hair cut)

after i watched coach creech's vlog, he crossed the line to mock at asian or japanese that did turn me off. believe me or not, i have no problem with his funny story but i disrespect how he used his asl *praying hands* to make fun of japanese as stereotype as the inferior. fyi, i am proud to be deaf asian who believe in asl against the idea of hearing's oppression over the deaf community.

i left a negative comment at coach creech's vlog but he swept it under the rug. i am at liberty to post this article on my own blog about re: my experiences with barber (hair cut) for all dear deafreaders who will read my voice for the diversity. i hope that you will open your mind to understand my point of view better and respect our diversity.

again, i want to clarify that i have no problem with coach creech's funny story itself but i do have problem with his asl *praying hands* to mock of japanese that i am NOT laughing at his part asl. mind you, he only cared about his funny story to be spiced by adding asl *praying hands* as his story with the touch of a cartoon as stereotype after he didn't bother to post my negative comment at his vlog. of course, i should not bother to take a battle with idiot. but i can't afford to allow his vlog to spread the disrespect asl to label the stereotype *praying hands* to asl users or aslan like it was uncalled to use "n" word for black people.

btw, coach creech has forgetten how he ISN'T different from hearing's oppression over deaf. why? take a hard look at how he thinks superior to be white over asian? is his culture superior over my culture by mocking to use asl *praying hands* as being inferior japanese. what a pretender of him to claim that hearing oppress deaf but behind his mind said in asl to imply me something else. if he asks me where is my sense of humor. oh, please i know the difference between insult/stereotype and sense of humor. enough is enough!

do you feel comfortable to embrace coach creech asl *praying hands* as being inferior japanese at his vlog? please remember if you don't leave any comment on this blog then i assume no one care about our diversity. please stand tall to be unity and leave a comment to respect using asl as grace for our diversity. my voice should welcome your voice to become our voice in one unity.

Heya,

Good blog post, this should bring some good discussion!

1) Yes, I'll admit that I was taken aback a bit by the sterotypical praying and comment on bad breath.. When I commented on his blog, I made suggestions on how to make communication easier next time he goes in for a haircut.. because I do prefer to keep things positive.. I thank you for bringing this up for discussion!

2) Deaf people characterize hearing people in funny stories all the time.. what to do if they're not the same race as themselves? We're very descriptive with ASL by nature.. and its part of Deaf culture to tell stories about our experiences in hearing world.. Coach Creech told us what happened... what if the asian lady DID USE PRAY hands?

3) I myself imitated Japanese Old woman and old man in my own humor vlog "Deaf Ninja Extended" http://deafroger.blogspot.com/2007/11/deaf-ninja-extended.html

I felt I was just doing a story-telling with cartoon-exagerrated sterotype characters.. Do you take offense to that as well? Or was that alright because I was telling a fictious story? Or because I was balancing it with other characters ? (millions of asian ninjas that got killed hmmmmmm...)

4) And people probably have noticed Coach Creech's beautiful wife is Black (or African-American etc) ;) Of course that doesnt automatically mean he's not a racist or didn't step over the line... it just makes me lean towards the idea that he probably just had good intentions? Maybe not realize how some people may percieve his performance?

5) Maybe we need to just start every Vlog like Frank (GreenHulk9000) saying "Hey, hey, this is just joke, ok? Funny, just fun time.. no insult, insult, not bad mean OK? Just funny Ok?"

Look forward to seeing more discussion on this. We all want a positive Deaf b/vlogsphere!

Cheers!
Roger

Hello, I am not trying to take sides, but share my opinion. :)

I just watch Coach Creech's vlog about barber. My question is did Japanese woman use "praying hand" to Coach Creech? If she did, then Coach Creech just copy exact what he saw. Only Coach Creech can answer this question.

Second, about negative comment that you left and Coach Creech didn't add it in his comment column. I wonder if your comment is harsh or mild negative? Maybe you can approach him with courtesy comment that you disagree his acting that you think his acting is a stereotype against asians.

Again, I am not at anyone's sides, but trying to get better picture on this event.

It's cool to see your new blog site. I hope sometime in future you will create a vlog. :)

You have my support! Some of our ASL signs are racist without realizing they are. Ive noticed ASL signs have changed for the better over time. Older deaf people at least some of them still usethe n on the nose sign to refer to Blacks/Afraican Ameicans. Current Deafies still usethe sign "jew" to refer to being greedy with money. That's bigoted. I can come up with a whole bunch of racist and bigoted ASL signs either used in everyday dialogue or in joke-storytelling. Imitating an Asian doing the prayer in comical way is offensive.

I am disappointed that Coach Creech did not publish your comment and respond to it with an apology.

Darn!

But, more power to you for speaking out!!!!!

deafroger,

believe it or not. you are my favor comedy and best one in asl vlog. no, you have not crossed the line due to your fictious story. yours is safe for now, smile.

omg, that is DOUBLE STANDARD for coach creech to use the stereotype asl to label the inferior japanese if he has black wife. it doesn't give him the right to use the stereotype asl to label any people as the inferior.

fyi, it was honor for me to ask my deaf black friend to be my keynoter at our church plus one another deaf black friend among our grooms in our wedding. i am asian myself. it does not give me the right to mock labeling of the people with color as inferior anyway.

if martin luther king is alive here to hear two black people to call "n" word at each other. i bet you my life that mlk will be pissed off and slap his brothers' heads to wake up and respect to each other without deficit thinking. why? "n" word was invented by white people who believe to be superior then should black be allowed to use "n" word too. i bet you that many black will disagree with me but mlk will agree to stand with me against "n" word for everyone including black people to misuse or to label the inferior.

how can coach creech be blinded to label the inferior in his existed story (not fiction one). of course, it is his free of speech but he doesn't respect the diversity therefore is he saving asl for his self-center or diversity? *scratch my head*

aslpride,

of course, i always respect you for not taking any sides.

btw, did you believe to buy coach creech's story for a japanese or asian to pray hands together almost 90% all the way in his vlog? i read his stereotype asl *praying hand* so loud to paint the picture like a japanese acted a inferior idiot.

come on, you are not blind to the asl. people need to be carefully to use asl to label as superior or inferior.

to answer your question. i believed my comment is harsh to address at both coach creech and michelle. too bad he removed my comment how i felt about his stereotype and her laughing to embrace it like it is glory. of course, it is his free of speech to use his stereotype asl.

i have no problem if coach creech is your friend. i just *FINISH* to say "enough is enough" to him for the stereotype in his story.

of course, i hug you as being proud of aslan. i like your comment and your vlog. p.s: yeah, i am planning to use vlog soon but i can't find the link that you used another one for quality video instead of youtube.

thank for reading and leaving a comment. i appreciated your knowledge about my voice.

thank for your support.

if you mean "But, more power to you for speaking out!!!!!" as "empower" to me for speaking out. i will accept "empower" to thank you rather instead of "power".

forgive me that i was taken aback by the "deaf power" due to "white power" vs black in history. i am all for "empowering" the rights to deaf as our diversity. i thank you again.

i admired your effort to cool off the situation.

if he didn't mean to hurt anyone's feeling then i don't see any change in his vlog. why he continued to collect other comments to embrace his story in glory with stereotype asl.

however you are still bias to give a lame excuse for coach creech's action. sighed, you too believe to buy the coach creech's story for a japanese or asian to pray hands together almost 90% all the way in his vlog?

i perhaps buy the story of 5% *pray hands* asl. omg, i am not that dumb to see his extend 90% to *pray hand* just to spice it up like it is inferior.

fyi, i went to the great clip and my favor barber happens to be asian and she DOESN'T pray hand to me at all but she smile to wave and to point at the seat for me to sit.

again, i was ntid/rit students to get involved with asian deaf club. believe me that the founder of adc and deaf asian members will not appreciate what coach creech has used the stereotype asl.

but again, thank you for your effort to keep in peace. i respect you but sorry about not buying your comment any.

coach creech,

thank you for letting me know to watch your comment in your vlog. if you swept my comment under the rug to save my reputation for my sake then please don’t bother to worry about mine. please worry about the large numbers of deaf children who happen to be asian and minorty are important to us all.

if you swept my negative comment under the rug to save michelle’s feeling then of course i agree to respect your way for her sake. again, think harder why i rather risk to put my reputation on big issue in much rush on behalf of deaf asian communty in order to save the deaf children’s feeling who are asian before it reached over 200 readers.

believe me, your asl would have hurted the deaf asian children’s feeling from my real bad experience. i was there to witness when i was young. again, i was there to witness when i was ntid/rit student as adult to have the asia deaf club. is michelle’s feeling is so important to be the one than the thousand of deaf children and deaf adult who happen to be asian that don’t count their feeling too if your vlog has influenced the 200 deafreaders to create more stereotype asl?

can you show me the video at the great clip how she kept talking and pray hands all the time at the same as you claimed 100% then i will be glad to retract my harsh comment and remove my article. but it won’t help us anyway.

again, i did not label you as racism. i said your stereotype asl is dangerous as inferior to cause to hurt the deaf asian children’s feeling to grow with deficit thinking around north america and maybe the world. please believe me.

deafroger did mention about your relationship with jessica. i embrace your true love because you see jessica as real person. but the question, can you trust me to suggest you not to use the stereotype asl *praying hands* to label japanese as the inferior. spicing up your asl with stereotype doesn’t accomplish the asl in deaf community to keep relationship with the diversity as unity due to the oppression issue.

i rather call you either my dude or my friend as new one. you are right, i don’t know you but you also don’t know me enough yet. i rather to see your way for me to admit my wrong doing myself for not man to man talking as you mention.

the question, can you be big man enough to admit the wrong do to use the stereotype asl? i know i have hurt your feeling as you have hurt my feeling. but i still have a little trust in you after you have proved your true love for jessica which is great for me to step in first move. you the man enough to step in second move?

how about e-mail me at so we can vp to chat and understand each other in true peace. i am only interested in the solution for better deaf community. you game? come on, i know you and i can become big men enough to learn from each other.

Cuong, I am glad you brought up this issue. Please do NOT let others discount your experiences as an Asian man. Someone who is not Asian can never fully understand what it is like to be Asian, just like a hearing person can never fully understand what it is like to be a deaf person.

Now that you have made me aware of it, I can see that the "pray hands" gesture has been used many times on TV and in movies to make fun of Asians. I think you are right to bring it up and help non-Asians become aware how this gesture can hurt Asians. Thank you for making me aware!

I also think negative stereotypes in general is a problem that our community does not address enough. Here's an example of an ASL video that perpetuates negative stereotypes:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YfI5i_i4Dwo

This video has negative stereotypes against at least two groups of people! :( Can you identify the stereotypes?

The worst part is that all the comments are positive and gushing over this video.
